Power Corrupts: A six-episode limited series designed in a lab to get Kate Winslet another Emmy (or a nomination, at least), The Regime has a clear voice behind the scenes: Creator Will Tracy’s two major credits as a writer are Succession and 2022’s The Menu, which is another way of saying that Tracy has a lot to say about the meaning of power, and how fragile it can be in the hands of unserious people. As Elena’s insecurities grow more intense, and Herbert gets more tangled up in her world… Well, not every regime lasts forever. When Corporal Herbert Zubak ( Matthias Schoenaerts), a soldier made infamous by his involvement with the violent shutdown of a political protest, gets brought to the Chancellor’s palace as a new lower-level aide, things start to change - in part because he helps protect Elena during a moment of violence, and in part because Elena’s shocked by the novelty of a non-yes-man in her presence. (The prosperity largely thanks to the country’s cobalt mines, which produce the valuable ore for both Western and Chinese companies.) However, anyone familiar with Shakespeare knows that power can be a fleeting thing - especially if you’re a deeply insecure and paranoid hypochondriac whose staff is too terrified to tell you anything resembling the truth. The Pitch: When we meet Chancellor Elena Vernham ( Kate Winslet), the fine and proud Eastern European nation over which she rules is enjoying relative peace and prosperity.
